localfreakDespite not collecting Astonishing X-Men (apart from owning number 1) it was practically a given that I would be purchasing number 51. Aside from just general Northstar love ("I am GAY!"- trufax quote) my purchasing it was guarenteed for two major reasons, the first being the irrational collector desire to not miss out. I don't spend half my time watching the auctions for Incredible Hulk #181 ticking up to £500.00 without sighs of regret that I was not even alive in the 70s. Honest. Okay yes I do and damn it I was not missing out on this one! The second is of course my passionate love of all things gay. I listened to the first gay sex scene in The Archers with open mouthed adoration, despite not regularly caring about either I watched a week of Coronation Street just to see the first gay kiss (disappointing) and tuned in to The Archers at Uni just to hear the First Gay Wedding. It kind of had to be.
...time for the small, petty, disappointed ramble, because although the story is lovely...I was a bit deflated:
Now don't get me wrong, the story is lovely lovely lovely and I am very very happy for Jean-Paul as the last time I saw him in comics he was pining pathetically over an irritatingly straight and oblivious iceman. It is from that comic, indeed, that my LJ icon:
comes from.
So yes. I had to have it.
I am very disappointed therefore, that to cover this Seminal and Exciting Joyous Event, Marvel let loose an artist who CAN'T DRAW SMILES.
No really. I'm not an artist. I can't draw for toffee and I always feel a bit bad about bitching about someone who can actually draw but at the same time with cartoons and graphic novels and comic books the art is HALF OF THE POINT. It is MORE THAN HALF of the story and a badly drawn image, or even one drawn in a style I don't like, can really mess up a comic for me. Hell Copperbadge makes that point far more eloquently than me (scroll down to the disturbing Captain America picture)
I understand of course that the styles I like are not the same as everyone else. Some people might like the new Wolverine and the X-Men pointy style which utterly ruined the cartoon for me despite the plots being semi decent.
But this seems like a major oversight. It's not just me is it? Every single page on this comic where people are meant to be smiling they look like they are suffering from some sort of cramp.
See this pic from the cover? That is the happiest smile you will see in the whole episode.
Yes it is sweet. But wouldn't you expect a few more exstatic expressions on the inside? I did. Instead we get this:
Yeah. I believe you there. You look so very happy.
And then there's this
And this:
And just in case you think maybe it's just Northstar who can't do smiling...it's totally not.
Kyle? Something you ate mate? I think you both look a bit like you've got food poisoning...
I don't have much more to say than that. I mean I'm happy I bought it and I think the whole concept of the issue is absolutely seminal wonderful marvellous. But I am SO disappointed that they decided to use an artist who is INCAPABLE of drawing genuingly happy smiles.
And just in case you think I'm overreacting, if you think maybe, really they aren't so bad? I leave you with this:

Date: 2012-07-05 09:32 pm (UTC)See, looking at this comic, I geniunely wonder if it's some sort of PLOT and the reason Northstar is clearly terrified is that he doesn't want to get married at all. He's all "SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE ME." Mind you, his boyfriend looks equally terrified. Clearly, someone grabbed them and was all "GET MARRIED OR I'LL KILL YOU ALL." and they went along with it.
Or, just possibly, the artist is incompetant. You know, something like that. ;)

And this is it. This is what I must add to my collection. It's even more disappointing than Brokeback Mountain having more tits than arse in it.
